Excluded From The Record
Women Refugees and Relief 1914-1929
T
his
study
reveals
women’s
hitherto
ignored
lives
as
refugees
and
relief
workers
during
the
First
World
War
and
shortly
after.
The
focus
is
on
coping
with
and
changing
the
devastating
effects
of
war
on
civilians,
rather
than
the
fighting
of
it.
Wherever
fighting
took
place,
people
fled
from
their
homes
or
were
trapped
behind
enemy
lines.
Most
refugees
were
woman
and
children.
While
some
came
to
Britain,
others
remained
in
or
near
their
country
of
origin.
They
were
helped,
sometimes under bombardment, by Quakers and Suffragists.

England’s Eastern Counties
Welcome Belgian Refugees
1914 - 1919
From
August
1914,
people
from
Belgium
came
to
Britain
seeking
shelter
from
the
war.
Some
settled
in
Hull,
whilst
other
went
to
Lincolnshire.
Intitially,
they
were
regarded
as
heroes
because
of
their
stand
against
the
German
armies,
Local
including
Belgian
Catholic
Priests
already
resident,
provided
homes,
clothes
and
food,
they
also
raised
monies
for
refugees
support.
Belgian
family
life
continued
in
much
the
same
way
as
their
homeland.
In
return,
the
refugees
contributed
towards
the
war
effort,
for
example
working
in
munition
factories
in
Lincoln,
Gainsborough
and
Grimsby,
and helping with farming in South Holland.
